Why a BMA anorak?

Inspired by traditional Indigenous outer shells, BMA anoraks are handmade in Canada with a commitment to provide you with heirloom quality, functional garments. Our anoraks are designed with a focus on thermal regulation– we make them wide and long to protect your vitals and allow for layering. In addition, we think reliability is especially important when out in the bush so we actively avoid using hardware that can fail like zippers and snaps. From the gauntlet to the sleeves to the kangaroo pocket, every detail was meticulously thought out to maximize your warmth and comfort while exploring nature.

The benefits of wool:

- Antibacterial

- Hypoallergenic

- Water repellent

- Fire retardant

- Moisture wicking

- Silent

- Retains up to 80% of its insulating properties when wet

BMA’s Dual Layering System

For all of you layering enthusiasts, we recommend one of our canvas anoraks to be worn over our wool anoraks. While each can be worn on their own, this combined layering system – wool inside, canvas outside – will keep you extra warm and dry. If you are considering two layers, we recommend starting with only a woolie first. Also, remember that your canvas anorak will likely need to be larger than your woolie so you can layer comfortably. For questions or more information about our dual layering system, feel free to contact us before your purchase and we’ll be happy to walk you through the process.

Very happy and warm.

I am not an anorak guy, I don't even own a pull over hoody. They are a pain for layering and controlling airflow. So why did I buy this? I am slowly increasing my wool clothing and needed something for Montana winters that could be worn alone if I am active and also under a down parka for the -40F/C days. I wanted a big hood that also had a high chin protector. This thing is awesome. I still dislike putting it on and off but that is a small price for the protection this provides. It was delivered right before a cold spell, just -10F. I was comfortable using this for quick outings or if I was being more active. It layered perfectly under my parka and the hood is perfect. It can be cinched down and with the built I neck gaiter, it is like wearing a face mask. My parka's hood is a zip on that velcros in the front. I have never liked I and usually do not wear it. Now I won't have to. This is nice and thick, tightly woven to block out some wind. I might need a cover if winds get above 20 mph (32 kmh) and it is below 20F (-6C). I am 6'1" and about 180lbs. The XL fits how I like it. I can't wait to get some really cold weather so I can test its limits. I would definitely buy this again, if needed, though I think this will last as long as I do.

Perfection

I have been wanting this anorak for over a decade and finally took the jump. It fits perfectly right out of the box. The craftsmanship is above expectations. The seems are extremely strong alleviating all worries of there being issues. I've now worn it in below freezing weather with just a t-shirt underneath, and it kept me cozy, not too hot and definitely not cold. For it being 100% wool the level of scratch was very low, but I've never had an issue with scratchy wool. I wil, in the future, invest in the canvas outer layer anorak, but this is amazingly comfortable and warm. This was an excellent investment, in my opinion, and will last me a lifetime. Thank you Boreal Mountain Anoraks for offering such a highly crafted and exquisitely made anorak. Worth every penny.
